ACHIEVERS & HOMEWORK

BRUNEL ACHIEVERS

What have you done today to make you feel proud?

Every Friday we have a special assembly to celebrate the children's individual achievements. Teachers nominate particular children to be at the front of the assembly and show their work or talk about their good deed. A cerificate of achievement is then sent home and the names of the achievers displayed in the school entrance.

You can see a list of all of Brunel Achievers of the Certificate page on the front of the Website.

GUIDE TO HOMEWORK

YEAR 1

To begin with, much of the homework in Year 1 consists of asking the children to see if they can find the answer to something at home.
The main purpose of this is to encourage the children to try to find the answers to questions, either by themselves or with help from an adult or older brother or sister. The questions are usually very simple and open-ended, eg 'Can you find out something about islands?' etc.
Later on in the year the children will be given more specific tasks covering various curriculum areas.

YEAR 2

During each week your child will bring home a variety of books, either books that they have read, need to practice, or books of their own choice from the school library. It's a great help if you can set aside a little time to read with your child at home, and if you have any comments these can be jotted down in the reading log kept in your child's book bag. In the reading log there is a space for words children need to learn to spell. Sometimes these are new words, sometimes they are common words that they frequently misspell.Children will also be asked to complete investigative work on certain topics.

YEAR 3

Homework is generally given out on a Wednesday to be returned the following Monday. It will include a variety of tasks including spellings, number puzzles and activities or research.

YEAR 4

We consider homework to be a very important part of the curriculum in year 4. We hope that this will not only prepare your child for year 5 but also help to improve their research skills. Homework could include weekly spellings and tables as well as other research items. We will give this out on a Wednesday and would like it returned no later than Monday please. We would also like your child to read everyday either silently or aloud and for their reading record books to be signed daily by an adult

YEAR 5

We consider homework to be a very important part of the curriculum. You will find there will be a greater amount than you have been used to and it may be quite challenging. However we hope that this will not only prepare you for the next year, but also help to improve your research skills. Homework may include weekly spellings and tables which should be learned for a test on Fridays. Topic linked homework will involve research from many sources including the Library and computer-based sources. Do remember that to copy material from the Internet or Encarta and to pretend that it is your own is plagiarism!!

YEAR 6

We consider homework to be a very important part of the curriculum in Year 6. You will find that there will be a greater amount than you have been used to and it may be quite challenging. However, we hope that this will not only prepare you for secondary school but also help to improve research skills.
