The Bridge

Nurture Group

Based at Brunel Primary School SALTASH

Our Environment

We aim to create an environment that includes elements of both home and the classroom. The curriculum includes structured play and many practical, hands on experiences.

We place particular emphasis on:
Boundaries: The children will be given very clear boundaries and we have precise expectations on acceptable and unacceptable behaviour .
Structure: They will be given as much structure as possible in order for them to feel safe and secure. A sense of predictability is very important in creating a calm atmosphere.
Language Development: Children will be encouraged to express themselves clearly and are taught different listening skills.
Task Completion: The children will be given short tasks, which they will be able to complete, ensuring progress is maintained and success is achieved.
Personal Targets: Each child will have three personal behaviour targets as negotiated with their base school and linked to an in-group reward and sanction system.

Food is a very important part of our day and all the children and staff share breakfast each morning.
We have the opportunity to cook each week in our purpose built, child size kitchen area.
At lunchtime, the children will eat their lunch within the nurture group, returning to their base school in time for afternoon lessons
Physical activity is an essential part of ‘feeling good’ . Regular PE sessions will be part of the nurture group curriculum.

Our quiet area, ‘The Blue Room’ has a sofa and a sensory area to create a calming and more homely environment.
We have areas of the room dedicated to role play, small world and puppets to create opportunities for children to use their imaginations and communication skills.

Sand, water and creative activities such as painting and clay also promote the children’s imaginative and investigative skills.
We have a range of construction activities, puzzles and games to promote turn-taking, problem solving, co-operation, thinking skills and team work.
