KEY STAGE ONE

Year 1

TOPICS FOR THIS YEAR A copy of each half-term's topic plan is on display outside your child's classroom.

LITERACY & NUMERACY
All teachers at Brunel follow the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies, and these are proving to be very successful in helping to raise standards of achievement In addition we also follow the 'Letters and Sounds' phonics programme which is continued throughout Year 1.

HOMEWORK To begin with, much of the homework in Year 1 consists of asking
the children to see if they can find the answer to something at home.
The main purpose of this is to encourage the children to try to find the
answers to questions, either by themselves or with help from an adult
or older brother/sister. The questions are usually very simple and
open-ended, eg 'Can you find out something about islands?' etc.
Later on in the year the children will be given more specific tasks covering various curriculum areas.

BOOK BAGS During each week your child will bring home a variety of books,
either books that they are learning to read, or books of their own choice
from the school library. It's a great help if you can set aside a little
time to read with your child at home, and if you have any comments
these can be jotted down in the reading diary kept in your child's
book bag.

PE

It is probably easier to bring your child's PE kit into school at the beginning of the week, where it can be left until it needs to be taken home again to be washed.

YEAR 2

TOPICS FOR THIS YEAR
A copy of each half-term's topic plan is on display outside the classroom. This shows the different topics that the children will be studying in each National Curriculum subject.

LITERACY & NUMERACY
All teachers at Brunel follow the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies, and these are proving to be very successful in helping to raise standards.

BOOK BAGS & HOMEWORK
During each week your child will bring home a variety of books. These will be books that they have read, need to practice, or books of their own choice from the school library. It's a great help if you can set aside a little time to read with your child at home, and if you have any comments these can be jotted down in the reading log kept in your child's book bag. In the reading log there is a space for words children need to learn to spell. Sometimes these are new words, sometimes they are common words that they frequently misspell.

PE and SWIMMING
Please ensure that your child has PE kit in school at all times.
Swimming lessons take place during the Summer terms.
