Welcome to Year 5
We are here to help your children to learn and reach their full potential ! We hope that you will find this guide useful but do not hesitate to ask if you require further information .
Year 5 Topics (International Primary Curriculum)
Autumn Term Weather Feelings
Spring Term Myths , Legends and Beliefs Here & Now, There & Then
Summer Term Mission to Mars The Global Swap Shop
Classes spend at least one hour in the ICT Suite each week.
Class Work
Pupils will be put into sets for Literacy and Numeracy lessons. Many factors inform us as to which set the pupil is in, including tests (Cognitive Ability Tests and SAT s ) together with discussions with their previous teachers. We try hard to place the pupil in the appropriate group but we keep the groups flexible so that they may move groups if necessary after consultation with pupils and parents. Pupils are encouraged to keep a pencil case with the necessary equipment inside. We work in blue cartridge pen in most subjects .
Reading
Each child will select an appropriate reading book and will be expected to read regularly both at school an d at home. Please make sure that a reading book is brought to school EVERY DAY!
Pupils should keep a record of their reading which should be signed by an adult when they are observed reading at home .
Homework
We consider homework to be a very important part of the curriculum in Year 5. You will find there will be a greater amount than you r child ha s been used to and it may be quite challenging. However , we hope that this will not only prepare them for the next year, but also help to improve thei r research skills. Homework will include learning weekly spellings and tables .
