Welcome to Year 5

We are here to help your children to learn and reach their full potential ! We hope that you will find this guide useful but do not hesitate to ask if you require further information .

Spring Term Myths , Legends and Beliefs Here & Now, There & Then

Summer Term Mission to Mars The Global Swap Shop

Class Work

Pupils will be put into sets for Literacy and Numeracy lessons. Many factors inform us as to which set the pupil is in, including tests (Cognitive Ability Tests and SAT s ) together with discussions with their previous teachers. We try hard to place the pupil in the appropriate group but we keep the groups flexible so that they may move groups if necessary after consultation with pupils and parents. Pupils are encouraged to keep a pencil case with the necessary equipment inside. We work in blue cartridge pen in most subjects .

Reading

Each child will select an appropriate reading book and will be expected to read regularly both at school an d at home. Please make sure that a reading book is brought to school EVERY DAY!

Pupils should keep a record of their reading which should be signed by an adult when they are observed reading at home .

Homework

We consider homework to be a very important part of the curriculum in Year 5. You will find there will be a greater amount than you r child ha s been used to and it may be quite challenging. However , we hope that this will not only prepare them for the next year, but also help to improve thei r research skills. Homework will include learning weekly spellings and tables .

WELCOME TO YEAR 6

Welcome back to Brunel Primary School . We hope you enjoyed your holiday, had lots of fun and have returned refreshed and ready to work.

You are now a Year 6 pupil and entering the very last year you will spend with us.

Many opportunities will come your way, aim to make the most of them, work hard and above all enjoy yourself.

Aim to work your hardest at all times, then nobody can complain. Remember that quality counts.

Ask yourself: “Is this really my best work?”

If you find the work too hard or you don't understand, please tell us. We cannot do our job unless you ask questions. So, if you are unsure ask, there may be others who are also having difficulties.

Homework

We consider homework to be a very important part of the curriculum in Year 6. You will find that there will be a greater amount than you have been used to and it may be quite challenging. However, we hope that this will not only prepare you for secondary school but also help to improve your research skills.

We know that at first it is very hard to organise your own homework timetable but you will find that as term progresses it will become easier. Try not to leave it all to the last minute, thus causing tears at home (from parents as well as you!) Please do not panic if you have difficulties finding the right books. We have a selection at school and the Public Library will also have some reserved. Don't forget– don't worry, ask for help, that is our job.
